KGTU Happenings

December 16, 2007 – I’m updating this under the 16th, but the actual date of these pictures is from sometime last week. I finally flew over the GTU with the new operational tower. I was/still am the only one from XCE to fly over to the new GTU. The ATC was very nice, and from 07TS I was straight in on a 3 mile base for runway 36.  There wasn’t much going on at all, in fact most of the traffic was students. I hope to fly over there again soon! Gallery

September 3, 2007 – After messing around at 07TS and with Dave’s Cessna we decided to fly over to GTU to see the Hind again. Dave flew the Helicycle and I flew the Cessna with my dad and Mark riding along. We arrived at GTU and everything was perfectly normal. There was the normal flow of interesting aircraft and the Hind was still in the hangar. We looked over the Hind and then decided to head back before a line of strong storms got too close. Well….the Cessna wouldn’t start. So we tried over and over like the day before to start it. It never fired, not once! Dave flew the Helicycle back to 07TS then drove the jeep over while we tried to jump it. We even added some more oil using a Fanta bottle that I had just finished drinking. Nothing worked so we tied down the plane and drove home. Luckily the storms dissipated and it never rained hard. Dave and Mark are going back tomorrow to try to fly her home. Gallery

August 29, 2007It has been a while since I’ve updated. Of course, nothing very interesting has been at GTU lately. I’ve also been busy with scouts, school, and Airventure 2007!! Anyway, my neighbor Dewey gave me the tip off that an Mi-24 Hind-D was over at GTU. So I had to fly over at take some pics!! I also saw a cool looking money..er, uh Mooney… as well as what I believe is Dave’s aircraft. Gallery

July 11, 2007On the way home from my dads work today we saw a very large jet landing at KGTU. We pulled in to discover a CRJ-700 Global Express. I took a few pictures because I had the camera with me. The moment I got home I hopped into the Clipper and flew over to GTU to snap some more pics of the CRJ and walked around taking various pictures of small activities. I also ran across the Volkswagen “Thing” that I saw at SWRFI in 2006. I had been wondering where it was at and had no idea it was stationed at GTU! Gallery

July 9, 2007After finishing my mowing job today I was able to be the first person to fly off the freshly cut grass before anyone else. And where else would I fly other than my favorite local airport (besides my own)? GTU of course! It is a work week so not much was happening, but I did see a Mexican Metroliner land, and man it was a greaser!! I also found a Cessna 172 that Wright Aviation was selling, so I snapped a few pictures! Gallery

June 30, 2007While working on the Pitts today we ran out of the hangar to see a Cessna Citation X flying over low to enter the pattern at GTU. Upon the completion of lunch we hopped in the Clipper and ran over to GTU. We parked near the main aerobatic hangar and found the guys working on the Sukhoi (Ditch Witch). Also in the hangar was the Orange Pitts M12, Globe Swift, Tail dragger Cessna 150, and Lancair. We also watched the Citation X and a Raytheon King Air 200 depart GTU as well as a very “fuglyAeronca Nose dragger. Gallery

June 24, 2007 As was mentioned in “07TS Happenings,” Dave, Richard, my dad and I flew over to GTU just because we can! I tend to enjoy showing off the planes of our X-Wing group and it was pretty awesome when more than just the Clipper showed up at GTU. Upon departing 07TS we saw Richard pulling the BC-12D out of the hangar (he flew over to meet with LJ) but I didn’t know he would show up at GTU. It was also cool that Dave felt like flying again and joined us in our talk with LJ today. Georgetown Muni. Is by far my favorite airport in the area, other than my own of course. There are many cool planes on the airport and there seems to be a surprise or something new almost every time you show up. For instance, today was the first time I had landed on Runway 11 due to the strong cross-winds.
